I'm building a stand for a 75g tomorrow and want it to be black, actually very similar to the kind you so commonly see in a Petco or PetSmart etc.

My question is what type/brand of paint to use to accomplish this?

On the inside of the stand, what should I use to protect the wood from splashes and salt creep? The same stuff as the outside of the stand?

I'm supposed to meet my carpenter friend at Lowe's at 7am, so I'm kind of in a pickle....help please...

    Thanks so much!

    an epoxy will be waterproof...
you MIGHT be able to get away with a krylon paint but not sure on that one

or if you dont care what color the inside is, you can save some money and just get some waterproof clear coat

I used exterior latex paint on my stand.

You certainly don't need to use an epoxy paint on a stand.

It's not really related, but this is what I'm doing with my hood:
I'm sealing the inside with a standard polyeurathane stain, then going over the top of that with a plain white latex paint. I'm going to make sure that there are no exposed gaps for moisture or salt creep to hide in.
For 75g, it will weigh a lot. I would strongly suggest using good oak 2x4 and 4x4 for the framing. I'm sure you and your friend knows that too. :)

I just painted mine not long ago and I have some pics in my album. First I just sanded the old paint away with 30grit to give myself a raw surface for the paint to adhere well. I bought a latex paint that was gloss. I would have done a semi but they didn’t have it in stock when I was at the store. When sanding make sure the tank it covered so not particles go into your DS. Hope this helps out! Good luck and put some pictures up when you have it done :)
