Hey everybody, my parents just told me that we are moving to North Carolina and I live in Jersey, Ive spent well over 1000 dollars on my reef tank which I only got into at the end of last year and its been up for 6ish months...however, I worked so hard have coraline algae growth everywhere and my 3 of my corals have attached themsleves to the live rock,
I also have two happy ocelleris clowns.

I dont know what to do because I dont think anything will survive the move.

Any opinions, should I sell my livestock, or ???

Please give me your thoughts and ideas thanks

Oh man, I always dread the move... I've seen posts on people moving tanks, so it's doable.
Not sure how big your tank and rock are, if the rock is not too big you could pack like they do for shipping corals. I would check if there is a LFS in the city/town you're moving to and see if they can hold your live stock until you move and are all set up. If you're moving to Charlotte, I'm pretty sure the local Fintastic will hold things, don't know about their fees on that, if any. Good luck! Looking at the bright side, you can rearrange the things just the way you need them on the second attempt :)

oh dear.......I think my advise would be to try and sell it as a package rather than try to move it and then use that money to start fresh after the move. You've learned A LOT that you can apply to your new set up. If it was me, I'd probably keep a couple of pieces of live rock (favorite shape, most coralline, first rock) only a true reefer can even comprehend being sentimental about rock but you probably have a couple pieces in mind :) keep them wet and start your new tank with them.....I have almost all of my pieces of original uncured marshall island rock that I started with in my tank and I also have a couple pieces I got on vacations we've taken....

Hopefully the move will be a good thing for your parents and you - usually moving means going up in terms of better job, more money, bigger house etc......

Alot of it is gonna be do you have the capabilties to survive the move? Are your parents going to support you on that is the last thing broken down and the first thing set up as soon as wheels start turning? These are things your gonna have to sit down and discuss with them. Its really gonna drive the train. Plus you have to ask yourself if it financially fiscal to do the move, buckets, containers, etc etc. Look in advance and see if there is any LFS near where your going so you can get SW, sand, stuff like that as soon as you hit ground.

Personally I only moved about 5 miles from where I used to live and it was stressful enough for me. I honestly think I would sell of livestock and just move tanks, equipment, and rock if I did it again or did a far move.

+1 to that. You'll take a hit on the fish and the coral but it sounds like you only have a few. The rest can move fine. You probably won't recoup your "investment" in your tank, so personally I'd hang on to that since I know it would be a while before getting the money and time to get back up to speed with it, at least for me.
You can keep the rock wet for a while, and that might survive live, but that will grow new coralline regardless if it dries out.

Well, here is my 2 cents. 6 years ago I made a move that was traveling time of 1-1/2 hours. Obviously waited til the last minute for breakdown. If you have your parents support, you can move it all and keep it all. yes it is a lot of work, but most of us in this hobby already put a tremendous amount into our systems. with support and willingness from others, you can do it.

    Good luck!!

I would like to amend my response.......I responded rather quickly to your post and I now would like to recommend that you do hold onto at least the equipment and tank.....UNLESS you can get a very good offer on selling the system.....I still stand on keeping some of the rock :)

what size tank are we talking about here? small tanks are pretty easy to move. Its when you get in the 55 and higher that you need several buckets for fish, rock, and coral, and things get heavy to carry and takes forever to set back up.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I am still personally deciding on whats best for me, the tank, and my family, but you guys have given me plenty of options :)
I have the 16 Gallon Innovative Marine Nuvo... with upgraded lighting system, a UV sterilizer and puregin add filtration..... I love the tank, so I would rather not get rid of it....but if I have to I will...
