Is there any harm in making a partial deep sandbed? I know they say either go shallow or go deep. Anything in between defeats the purpose of a DSB and becomes a detritus trap in time since it cant break it down.

What if I make half the tank a DSB with the other half shallow? Like a gradiant where one side is only 1 inch and slopes up to a 4-5inch DSB on the other side? Any harm in this? Any benefits? Doesnt really matter?

I guess I would ask why you are wanting to do it?

Because of the rockwork. When I created the rockwork to elevate the arch structure I had to glue rock underneath it so the bottom is ugly and I like toe bury it. The other half is just a boulder so no need to bury it.

I believe the final prognosis was that sandbed depth doesn't really matter. Denitrification can occur in shallow beds as well as DSBs. What matters most is proper maintenance. A few Nassarius snails will keep it clean and stir it for you.
