    ok we know mh lights are the way to go... i was wondering though if i could go with the 250 watt halogen lights u buy on the stands at your local hardware store..... has anyone tried halogen?

    the problem is they don't sell bulbs that have the spectrum you need.

    Those bulbs dont represent that spectrum as the sun, as do the MH bulbs. Aquariums bulbs are made esp for corals/plants. Luna

    halogens have a very low kelvin rating. you actually may be able to grow plants with it. but on a reef tank it probably would just grow a lot of algae

    Besides the spectrum, halogen bulbs put out very little light and a lot of heat compared to good bulbs. I don't even think they will work very well for growing plants.
