Well came home from work tonight and noticed Goldie was all puffed up. She has only done this 1x before since I had her..so I snapped some pictures

she kept burping the air out

I quickly realized why she was puffed. I had a turbo twist UV plugged in. The tube came loose this Sunday and drained 15g of water (at least) on the floor. I thought I had it all cleaned up but you know carpets...it brings the water back to the surface. Not being sure if it was leaking I unplugged the UV and disconnected it.

I go back to my computer and smell that smell you know is not good...that burning smell. So I go over to unplug my GCFI strip (yes it was a GCFI strip) and got shocked enough that it burned my finger. Obviously it was not working..as water got onto it and was shorting out.

So I think that Goldie was puffed due to current in the tank. Replaced everythign (new GCFI strip) and placed a grounding probe. Hopefully she will be ok...

But a puffed golden puffer is not something you see everyday so I thought I would post it.

That is very puffed. I have a northern puffer and he dosnt get even close to that in comparison. He is big and puffs up to the size of a softball, but that thing is HUGE.

I had to look up what a northern puffer was..cool fish. Can you post a pic?

Goldie is very large to begin with..she is about 8-10" I think. But I was surprised at how big she got. She was actually bigger then that. Luckily I had my camera on my desk so I was able to snap pic fast.

I just hope that the current did not stress her too much. She seems to be getting better as evening is going on. I have her lights off and I keep hearing this crunching noise...she is eating rocks like usual so I think she might be ok

probably about 3-4 months now. The LFS person told me that she puffed quite a bit at the store..mainly after eating. However she has only puffed 1 other time since I had her. She is the only thing in the tank, so I think that is the reason she doesnt puff. She was in with a bunch of big fish at the store

I see you are in St. Louis...me too!

Wow, she looks like a golden basketball! All kidding aside, she is a beauty! I'm sorry about the spill, I can empathize as I recently had a 10G fuge spill and 4 years ago had a 600G flood that ruined my house. Glad you caught it in time before more damage was done. Glad you were seriously hurt with the zap either, that could have been deadly, K+ to you.

Here is my Northern Puffer. I keep a temperate tank so temp is around 70 degrees. I am thinking I will re-release him back into the place that I got him from at the end of the summer. This picture was taken in the early morning before the lights came on, but when the lights are on his eyes are very light blue. He "sleeps" at night by laying on the sand and turning nearly completely white. Right now he is around 6", about 2" when I caught him over the summer. But at the rate he is growing he will be too big for my 65 gallon by the end of the summer. Especially since I will be adding tropical strays this summer. A great fish, very smart and will eat from my hand.

cool looking fish! Goldie sleeps on the sand also. She looks good today..everything seems to be intact and she is back to her usual self of begging for food and acting like I am starving her (She splashes around when she sees me....I have a lid....and wiggles around and bites at the tank. She then acts like she dies and smashes into the sand! I do think I will increase her feeding a little bit over the next week or so due to the stress! She had been on a diet because she was too fat!
