My lfs is having a sale this weekend and was thinking about picking up a biocube29 and stand to house a Peacock Mantis Shrimp. Do you think that a biocube would be adequate as far as filtration and lighting?

I have the same setup that is housing a peacock mantis. Its more than sufficient. Good luck with the setup.

As long as the mantis is on the smaller side, it's fine, but I'd put a full-grown peacock into something a bit larger as they get rather large.

You'll also want to consider laying down a piece of 1/8" acrylic over the bottom of the tank, as if your mantis digs, it may try and break the "rock" at the bottom of the tank. Put any rockwork in contact with the bottom so the mantis can't squash itself if it digs and the rock shifts.

You'll really love keeping O. scyllarus tho...very, VERY interactive and rather intelligent.

Every so often, toss in a few pieces of rubble and/or shells for it to build with...it's really fascinating watching them "think" about where to add them.

Finally, keep the lighting on the low side...this will help prevent "shell rot".

thanks for the responses and tips..... the peacock mantis im looking at is about 5-6 inches... I think ive talked myself out of the biocube for this mantis. I think im going to do a DIY drilled glass tank, unless I find a tank that will work. The smaller drilled cubes that are around the 30 gallon mark ive seen, I dont feel like it would give it enough room to move about. And the biocube glass I fear maybe too thin in a strike..may still pick up the cube for the girlfriend(or atleast thats the story im sticking too)....If I do go acrylic what would be a good thickness?.... as far as glass I was thinking 3/8 starfire...
