Yes. A peacock would. Any smashing mantis type would, if the pep shrimp is small enough.

However, if you have a hitchiking mantis, it is highly unlikely that it is a peacock. Do you have more info on it?

My pet mantis named Princess only eats what I put in front of her. She has a little hermit crab buddy that traveled with her from the LFS, and I've even tried to put him in front of her and she won't touch him. She has a margarita snail who's in charge of cleaning that she won't touch. I used to find hitchhiker snails in her tank, and I would pluck them up from where ever they were, and put them in front of her. And on comes the destruction :D She took a cerith snail from my hand last time I gave her one...which was kind of spooky. I put the snail in with tongs, but he didn't land where I wanted, so I repositioned with my hand, and she grabbed it while I was repositioning and continued to throttle it senseless in her den.

Basicly, yes. A Peacock would LOVE to eat Pep shrimp. However, yours doesn't quite sound like a Peacock, especially considering it was a hitchiker. Mantis shrimp are smart. They know when something is too big for them. So, if it is a small mantis at the moment, the only things that would be in danger would be small members of your CUC.

If it's a spearing type mantis, that's a whole different ball game buddy ;)

It is unlikely that it is a peacock mantis or a spearer. Neither are common hitch hikers. Peacocks build their own dens out of rubble, and spearers build their dens in the sand.

The peppermint shrimp can become lunch, but it is likely the mantis will leave it alone, preferring to eat snails and hermits.

This shrimp was a hitch hiker. I've done a lot of searching and it looks like a peacock, but I also found info on the reef mantis, but I've only seen it 3 times and it moves rather quickly thanks for all the help and ideas

You are probably going to want to remove him. I tried using the soda bottle method to catch a crab and it wasn't effective for me. I had to remove the rock. 4 times my peppermint shrimps stole my bait.

    Good luck catching him.

whatever type of mantis it is it might go after the shrimp.

Do you know what rock the mantis has made a den in? Until you get him out of there I would squirt food into that area when you feed. This will cause the mantis to come out of his den and eat. If you keep your mantis full then it will be less likely to come after other things in your tank.

If you know what rock it is in....the easiest way would be to remove the rock from the tank. Put the rock in saltwater with a little powerhead for flow and try to get it to come out of the rock with some food. It will be easier to get it that way. Or if you ahve a sump you can put the rock in your sump and let hte mantis live down there. Just dont forget to feed it!

I know people will put the rock in FW and this kills the mantis. But you really dont want to kill it, as many people on here will take it from you. You might even be able to sell it to your LFS

    Good luck hunting!
