Inverts are very sensitive to ammonia, nitrite and nitrate so it would not be a wise idea. Just get a piece of table shrimp and leave it for a few days.

It will most likely die. No sense in investing in one to watch it suffer.

I too have a cycle question. I bought a 55 gallon and will be upgrading soon. I have 25 lbs of live rock in my 20 gallon. I was thinking about adding 20 lbs of dry rock and using water from lfs tank, would there be a need to allow it to cycle? I would be moving my cuc, a few corals and cleaner shrimp.

Better yet, why not use some fish food, raw shrimp, Dr.Tim products, or MB7, Cured live rock.

A living animal produces ammonia as a bi-product of metabolism. Ammonia burns gills.

So many ways to cycle a tank without using live animals. Damsels do not grow on trees. :)

Even if the mantis survived you'd have a hell of a time getting it out of the tank if you ever needed to remove it.
