Hey guys, I am back! The Reef tank is doing well. All the gunk that had appeared all over the rocks is gone! Now I placed another order for a bunch of corals and goodies :)

In a side note, the project continues! We are just beginning to clean 2 tanks, 1 with cool dimensions too ( ill get to you guys on that later).. I plan on making one a planted tank and I've decided that it would be GREAT to do a mantis shrimp tank with the other one. A peacock mantis shrimp tank to be specific. ( still have 2 more empty tanks that we will get to later..)

Now, I'm not to familiar with their care and what sorts of things I would need?. Anyone can enlighten me a bit more on that?

FURTHERMORE ( lol) can anyone please tell me where I can buy one from as well?

My LFS had no problems ordering me one. I kept mine in a 90g FOWLR with all typical equip. I fed it a variety of foods. It would eat anything. Cubed, sliversides, even flake. Since the peacock is a "crusher" I would also feed cheap hermits. I kept him with larger fish that he couldn't kill. He would give anything a good thump if it got too close. Overall very interesting.. I miss him dearly.

I don't think you had it on the right environment for him if it was in a 5 gallon. To my understanding they are not reef safe and they need a 30G or more..

Come on college guy, you're asking us to start an experiment for you without providing us any starting knowledge on tank size, params, filtration etc? that doesn't seem fair;)

peacocks need a pretty species specific tank with great filtration as they tend to kill things and stash them for later and let them rot, so you'll need a nice sump/fuge IMO to deal with that. I'm housing a h. wennerae right now and can attest to the nightmare of params they can cause.

But honestly some more info would help.

reef lighting will cause shell rot with O. Scyllarus, leading to their demise. also as stated, Peacock's get larger than many other species of smashers and require at least a 30 long imo. very tough critters and the most enjoyable to watch and interact with, i have had several mantis species, and thoroughly enjoyed them all!

interact? how do you interact with your mantis shrimp? i've heard they mash human fingers pretty bad!

i've seen a lot of mantis shrimp vids on youtube and they seem pretty bad ass. my last tank, i had fish dying randomly and i never found the culprit. mantis shrimp? maybe.. i never heard the tell tale clicking sounds though.
