    Hello all,

I was wondering about the nursing stage of Peppermint Shrimp. Does anyone know exactly why the eggs have to be kept on the swimmerets of the shrimp. Is there a hormone that the "mother" is secreting into the eggs that makes them hatch at a certain time, or that if separated, would inhibit the eggs from hatching?
Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Just a guess but stomatpod (mantis shrimp) mothers have to constantly aerate their eggs, so it could be something to do with the water movement caused by the swimming legs.

Or it could just be a convenient place to store them. :D

@ proreefer yes it is a tough first question and I do hope that I can find some answers.

@ stepho - I know that the eggs will not hatch unless they are attached - I will do some research on how water movement might affect egg development and see if that might lead to an answer, however, I do know that there is a functional reason for why they are attached to swimmerets, so it is more than just a convenient place to carry them. Thank you for the lead.

Water movement keeps fungus from forming on the eggs.

So, after doing some research I figured out what Nanareefer said to be true, so we figured out how to achieve this. We are going to put 6 large vials in a tank, then in each of the vials put a pasteur pipet. We are going to cut off the end and make them into little bubblers. So, this is going to be fun, thank you all 3reef, I appreciate your help. I will post my results here to keep you updated on the progress.
