SG is more useful for calculations like the one discussed on the tank volume thread, though. Keep that in mind.

Should I use SG, for mixing new saltwater?

I use a hydrometer made by instant ocean. It does the job well. However I have checked against a refractometer at the lfs, it is .001 off.
    That's with in my tolerance.

With the hydrometer its important to rinse it out and make sure the swing arm is not encrusted or hampered.

with everyone saying the refractometer is the most accurate why is it reading lower thanw what it truely is. if it says 36.7ppm y is it actually 35 or whatever? why spend 30-40 more on something that u need to do math to get a correct reading? not trying to be rude but im confused

Most refractometers sold to people are salt not seawater refractometer. So you will always be 1.7ppt low.

SG is actually temperature dependent. This means that with a 35ppt solution, if you calibrate with the calibration solution at 60 degrees, you're going to be off (by about .0015, I think) when you read your 80 degree tank water.
