Well I told myself I was not going to post in this thread but I can't help it.

Agree 100% then why am I doing it?

Then who is going to pay? Someone has to pay. You want your grandchildren to pay? They will either with higher taxes, higher inflation, or reduced growth and job opportunities.

How about massive government debt instead?

I know it's so hard not to respond. But that was all I meant, if you don't pay for it then the everyday taxpayer ends up taking the bill one way or another.
And I pay enough taxes as is.

I'm from that "younger generation", but unlike the majority of my peers, have no sense of entitlement. Individual responsibility!

To the OP... YOU signed those loan documents and took the money, and agreed to pay it back in terms that were fully disclosed. Why do you think you should not have to pay these loans back?

With that money you obtained a law degree, so I'm guessing you make fairly good money now assuming you are employed. Why not put off that expensive car purchase or tank upgrade, and make a sizeable down-payment on your debt?

Yeah, I went to college, graduated 5 years ago. I racked up a sizeable chunk of debt, but have buckled down and will be debt free by spring next year. I dont make 6 figures...

If you rely on handouts for your entire life, you will only accomplish what others are willing to give you.

Hey, I appreciate the taxpayers subsidizing my undergrad and graduate education. You guys paid all my school bills and even my living expenses. Of course I took a somewhat unorthodox approach, rather than signing a petition, I worked hard and got fellowships ;)

I completely agree that I did take out the loans. I could have gone to a cheaper law school as well (total cost of $60k vs $150k, but I made the decision to attend the more expensive school). And in my defense, I have never missed a monthly payment, and I graduated 5 years ago. I definitely don't make big bucks either, I chose a path of law working for counties or the government, not a big firm (again my choice).

With that said, I highly doubt loans will be forgiven, and I will continue to pay them for another 20 years until they are paid off. It just sucks that 80% of what I "pay back" is interest, when the actual amount I borrowed has already been paid off to this day. Maybe the govt can limit interest rates for student loans then. Nobody would argue a higher education isn't good for everyone right? Then people can pay back closer to what they actually borrowed, and that's more fair?
