A friend of mine has started a reef tank. He says he has had PH readings of 8.3. Fluctuations are taking place however causing the PH to keep changing. What could be causing this? Tank has been set up for a number of weeks with ammonia spikes, etc. Nitrates are normal as well. I thought once you reach the proper PH, it should be relatively constant...

It takes months for a tank to balance out, if anything is added before the tank finds its "Zen" then it will likley have consisten problems. Just let it sit with the Live rockl and live sand and maybe some crabs and snails.....if there have been fish added already he may be in for a chaotic battle. Are there fish in the tank? How many if so and what type? Also what size tank and how old exactly? This info will help greatly in determining what could cause the fluctuations.

pH normally fluxuates a bit it seems. It's lower in the morning and higher in the afternoon.
