so my phosphate reactor should be in this week and I'm planning on using phosguard for now in it since I have it already and want to use it up before I buy something different (if I buy something different)

I have a 75 gallon tank with 3ppm phosphates right now and was wondering how much phosguard I should put in the reactor to start, I know I should have a low flow just enough to make it look like the media is "boiling", please tell me if thats not correct.

but I'm a little fuzzy on how much I should put in, the directions say approx. 1 cup per 75 gallons but it also says continuous use in smaller quantities is better than intermittent use in larger quantities so I didn't know if I should use less

anyone with experience using phosguard in a reactor please share your experience, thanks in advance

I use that stuff in a bag for my puffers salt water tank. I just throw some in the back and throw it in the filter.

I don't know what they are off-hand so it if is says 1 cup per 75 gal I'd prob go with 3/4 cup to 1 cup.

It's not teriffic and I'd personally plan on getting some GFO when that stuff runs out.

Also, you may want to think about putting that stuff in a thin bag in the reactor. I don't know how it will react over time when it's fluidized...

yeah the thought of GFO crossed my mind after I run out of the phosguard, I may be getting the GFO sooner if the phosguard breaks down in the reactor lol

    thanks!

IMO phosgaurd is terrible.. Yea it works but the aluminum makes your corals look like crap and close up. I'd switch to phosban

Disclaimer: I dont work for seachem, but I do use their products. I use PhosGuard and it works pretty well for me. I never ran GFO, so I can't really compare. But my corals seem happy.

Also, Seachem claims there's no aluminum release with Phosgurad. I read this about Phosguard on their site:

    Seachem. PhosGuard

I also use Phosguard with great results. It works extremely well, so if your corals look like crap, most likely you are using too much. As my tank is getting less and less algae, I have to use much less Phosguard. For your 75, I would start with less than half of what they recommend. You are correct on the "boiling" look in the reactor.

So do I have to worry about putting the phosguard in a media bag or can it be loose in the reactor?

Id google phosgaurd coral problems...seems like its mostly leathers. But it really impacted my leathers and gsp..everyone cant be using to much...and i know for a fact i used like a 1/4 the recommended amount

I also use it in my DIY Reactor, a Gatorade bottle, and it works fine for me.

so am I ok keeping the phosguard loose in the reactor? I don't want to have any issues with it breaking apart into dust and getting pushed into the DT.
