there are options on filter media that will absorb Phosphates

if you have corals, then IMO your best using a Granular Ferric Oxide = GFO based product
there are many brands available BRS have one, Rowaphos is a product I use, Phosban is another brand name

Chemipure elite by Boyd is another 1 with GFO and also Carbon I believe

    many products to chose from

I have a similar question about this GFO? say one were to have a HOB filter, could you run GFO, carbon, and or phosphate removing media all at once? Like if you had different (yet seperated by filter sponge) layers of media in your HOB? anything wrong with that?

GFO is a phosphate remover - so running that and another type may be overkill IMO

But yes, if you have an HOB - you could run mesh pouches of Carbon, GFO etc

dont mix the products in same pouches - as the lifespan is different
so by keeping them seperate, you can discard and replace the carbon every 2 weeks - 1 month (depending on amount used and clarity of water)
and the GFO might be OK for 6 weeks - 2 months

For nano tanks that are having phosphate issues, I like the old fashioned aluminum based phosphate removers. If you're having high phosphate, make sure you follow the instructions carefully. It will reduce phosphates very quickly, and then it deadsorb those phosphates just as quickly. These types of phosphate removers will be white and not brown like GFO. The reason I like this type for nanos is that GFO will tend to turn into a brick if you put it in the bag and shove it in that small chamber in the back. When that happens, only the outer "shell" of the GFO is in contact with the water and you have to pull it out every couple of days and manipulate the bag, rinse again, then put back in.

Chemipure Elite has phosphate remover in it and that works well in nano's

Kent Marine also has Phosphate Sponge

There is one GFO that I forgot to mention that won't turn into a brick in your back chamber. It's Reef Pure PHOSaR made by Warner Marine. (PHOSaR....not PHOSaR HC. The HC one will turn into a brick too). Bulk Reef Supply also has a pelleted (vs granular) Ferric Oxide

Have you looked into a Poly-Filter Pad. Foster Smith carries them
