    The number one source of phosphates in home aquariums is flake food.

    +1 on those. Pellet/flakes or horrible for that (another reason I never use dry food), but frozen foods can contain their fair share of phosphates as well. I would just try the food thing first, since its probably the easiest thing to do. And yes, you can add tank water. If that doesnt work, then you have to start looking into the substrate/rocks
