Set your F stop to the lowest setting, use a tripod and and set your shutter speed as slow as possible, set the white balance to flourescent lighting, the environment to indoors or cloudy weather. Use the manual settings mode.

I have that tank as well. It's actually a horrible tank to take pictures in through the front because of the degree of the bow. Their 24g model doesn't have this issue to the same degree. I shoot though the flat sides to minimize this effect.

I actually found these tanks to be ok lite for pictures. On occasion I may use supplemental light where necessary, but the occasion was rare.

My favourite lenses are the Canon 50mm (1.4) and the 100mm. I'm presently saving up for the 24-70mm "L" lens. They say once you go "L", you never go back... or something like that. LOL.

I never go over 400 on the ISO. If I need to go over that to get a shot, I increase the light supply. Clip-on flood lamps with a crisp white bulb can be your friend. Your pic is going to be grainy any higher ISO than that. Some cameras can handle a higher ISO better than others, but I have the Canon 5D Mark II which has a high acceptable range of ISO... but I STILL don't like the results over 400.

Take your shots at night with everything dark in the room besides the tank.

A tripod is essential IMO, and I also use a shutter release so I don't even have to touch the camera and add to the shake.

Learn how to adjust your white balance. This is one of the easiest and most neglected function on these cameras. Doing it after the fact on your computer will not give you the best results. If you need help with that, just ask. I made a reusable white balance stick. It's just a kabob stick with a pure white piece of plastic on it and I stick it into the tank to take my adjustment shots.

    Amen!

We also have the Tamron 2.8. It's a pretty crappy lens (no offense LOL). We didn't know when we bought our camera in 2006 that glass was more important than the body! Still get some pretty good shots out of it now that we have the T5 lighting. We have it on the tripod & use the shutter release to reduce camera movement.

Another trick if you don't have the cable release is to use the self timer. Just hit the button and stand still.

Us too, Btcole. We rent the L series stuff for NASCAR races & vacations...heck, we've rented it so many times we've paid for it by now LOL...but, that's a little $$ at a time instead of all at once!
