Hello All! I currently culture phytoplankton, rotifers, artemia and copepods for my reef tank. My entire culture system is a DIY setup with 2L seltzer water bottles, and airstones. I have had success using Micro Algae Grow from Florida Aqua Farms to fertilize my phyto. However I am wondering has anyone here used Miracle Gro as the fertilizing agent? I do routinly dose my reef tank with phyto for the various inverts. I understand Miracle Gro contains Copper. Anyone had problems in their reef tank from using Miracle Gro grown phyto? I was also wondering if anyone has used Schultz brand liquid plant food. Below i have the link to the MSDS pages for Schultz and it makes no reference to containing any Copper. Any help or information would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Ya that thought crossed my mind. However I am always on the look out to improve my cultivation and decrease the cost. The Miracle Gro and Schultz I can buy locally for less than the cost of Micro Algae Grow, plus I dont have to pay for shipping to Alaska. Im just wondering if anyone has tried these? Or had any ideas about it.

I bought some Tetra from a local who had fed with miracle gro and didn't tell anyone. I don't think the surgeon has removed the plastic bottle from the sellers rearview yet.

Exactly why I don't buy from anyone anymore. But yeah it works, his culture was one of the densest homegrowns I'd ever seen. Unfortunately the little bit of algae I had going on at the time became equally as dense after feeding my tank his crap for a couple weeks.

Thanks! Well ok then. I may hold off on the Miracle Gro until I can learn of more experiences with it. However I am going to try the Schultz fertilizer. No copper listed and it doesnt have any harsh addetives. So I set up another culture and we will see in 2 weeks what it does. Hopefully some othe people will join in with an opinion or ideas.

Also just in case there was any confusion. I know miracle gro will grow phyto. And i know other fertilizers will grow phyto. What i am curious about is if anyone has dosed their tanks with phyto that was grown with miracle grow or schultz fertilizer. I know it will grow it, i just want to know if the tank had any bad reactions to the copper or other bad reactions. Thanks reefmonkey for the info on it causing algae outbreaks. I will keep that in mind.

apparently melev used miracle grow, it doesnt explicitly say how it affected tank, but i think its safe to assume it worked if you look at his gallery
