    I'll be setting up my new reef tank soon at my new house. I'm toting with the idea of black sand. Seems trivial but you only get one shot on these decisions. I'd love to see what people have done. Thanks all

    IMO black sand looks better in FW but for SW I don't think black substrate really looks good. Majority of the SW tanks I have seen and really liked have light substrate, also not sure if they make any aragonite based black sand either. I would think many corals/clams/etc will lose their color against a dark substrate, get washed out.

    There is a black sand available out there but most people that have tried it eventually switched it out for a light color sand. One of the biggest complaints is it always looks dirty as the light colored detritus settles on it giving it a salt and pepper look.
