i just finished plumbing with 1" pvc for my return and the flow is realy slow
should it be smaller size to maybe have less head pressure/column weight? or does size not matter for going up?

    does size matter

I don't know if this will help you..

I have 1" going from sump to tank.

I have up to 1200gph overflow. 2@1" going in to a 2" pipe in to sump
I have a return pump rated at 1350gph @1 foot head
    I have about 6 foot of head "2 90' bends+1 45' bend+about 4 foot straight piping"
I have 3 spouts and a back flow hole "unsure of what's it's really called"

I think my flow rate per spout is around 300gph and the back flow hole is about 1-10gph

I do have it 1/4 turned off, right after pump. too much flow if at full blast!

I turn to up or down and it don't raise or lower tank level at all.

    Something to think about,
    Mike

What kind of flow are we talking here? What kind of pump do you have and what is the head pressure at 5'?

1" will be able to flow just about as much as would ever be needed. I would suspect improper overflow, pump, or both.

Head pressure is per inch. A 30 foot coulumn of water has the same head pressure wether it is 10 foot square or 1 inch. Pounds per square inch.

Right now you are getting as much GPH as the pump can put out. Decreasing diameter increases pressure, increases velocity, and decreases flow. Just imagine putting your thumb over the end of the return line.

Oh yeah, those are going to be WAY WAY underpowered for a 220.
On my 200 long, I am running dual Little Giant 4-MDQX-SC's
