I have a Diamond spotted goby about 4 1/2 inches in my 90 gal DT, who has been there about 4 months. Love him and the way he cleans my sand is 2nd to none.

He recently went through some harassment issues where my Kole tang had been picking on him alot, the tang was a new addition, also the only tang.

So now the tang got taken back to the LFS for store credit. After seeing how bad he got messed with I would like to add a Pistol shrimp to attempt pairing them up. My question is has anyone had experience doing this?
If so what is the most affective method/pistol breed. Done lots of reading but just wanted some actualy experienced advice. Thanks in advance for any help.
BTW he has a HUGE sand cave he has made over 1 of my biggest pcs of rock where he, and the shrimp could live.

i think it works the other way around. the shrimp doesnt protect the fish, the fish protects the shrimp because it has poor eyesight, while the shrimp digs its tunnel. sorry

You shouldn't have any issues with them pairing up... Should be fairly quick that it happens.
Research the type of shrimp you want first though! Some can be pesky

he wants the shrimp to protect his goby though. its cool to have them pair up and i agree with dingo, but, the shrimp isn't going to protect your goby

if you end up getting a pistol shrimp, let us know how it goes. i have a diamond goby that could probably use a friend.

I was pretty sure that the entire point of the shrimp/goby pairing was an issue of protection in exchange for eyesight.

I'm not sure Diamond gobies (the sand sifters) pair with pistol shrimp. I believe the genuses that do pair up with pistols are Stonogobiops, Amblyeleotris, and Cryptocentrus.
Unless Diamond Spotted goby refers to one of those I wouldn't count on them pairing up. I think the commonly named Diamond gobies are in the Valenciennea genus. Might want to look into that first.

I also don't think the pistol defends the fish except by building a burrow that the fish can dart into. That's the exchange in my mind, eyesight for the burrow.

Yea I didnt literally mean protect but more of a buddy deal, hes such a loner. Read an article that said a Diamond goby would pair with a Randall's pistol shrimp. Just didnt want to order 1 put him in,not pair up and then have to build a shrimp trap,rinse/repeat til i got 1 to pair.

Well looks like an experiment will update when I get 1.

Well, there's also the issue of the shrimp and goby hanging out, and the shrimp knowing when to use his claw and/or retreat back into the burrow.

yes the GOBY protects the shrimp by letting the shrimp know when theres danger. then they go into there burrow/tunnel. sorry if that was confusing

edit:screwtape the last part was what i was trying to get across. thanks
