i am wanting to do a pistol shrimp tank. has anyone ever had one that could give me some good advice on them? i have a 15 gallon tank that he will be in at my moms house and a 30 gallon reef at my dads. so i know well of how to take care of a tank just not so much the pistol shrimp. i have read up on them but i would like someone with good knowledge or some good experience with them to give me some pointers and what not.
much appreciated K+ for anyone who helps me out.

From what I've read, they're pretty straight forward. Just make sure your rocks are sitting on the bottom of the tank and not the sand as they burrow a lot. That and find one paired with a goby if you can. Should be able to get away with feeding brine and mysis. That and don't freak out if you hear the occasional popping sound ;) Let us know how it goes

Do you mean mantis shrimp by any chance? Im just asking because you say your gonna feed it live shrimp and I would think that watching a mantis would be more fun because I think pistols are essentially blind.

Use plenty of sand and make sure your rocks are on the bottom part of the tank so you dont have rocks crashing down. They really like to have a watchman goby to pair up with.

+1 on are you sure you're not talking about a mantis shrimp?

If you do really mean a pistol shrimp, you will very rarely (probably never) see it unless you have a watchman goby with them. Even with a goby I only see it for a few seconds at a time every other day or so.

I'm not sure live shrimp is a good food for them either, I don't believe they are hunters as they have very poor eyesight. AFAIK they mostly rely on undigested food from the goby and sometimes food that the goby brings them.

A pistol shrimp and watchman would be fine in either the 15g or 30g IMO, just give them plenty of rock that is set firmly on the bottom of the tank to burrow under and make sure your substrate has a variety of particle sizes that the shrimp can use to build the tunnels.

yes im talking about a pistol shrimp. and in their natural environment they hunt down other shrimp. the goby and pistol shrimp have the spotter/sniper kind of relationship going on. the shrimp kills the live prey and what not and the goby gets the dead prey or however you wanna say it. im getting a pistol that will get bigger. and deffinetly will be already paired.

I've never heard this before. Do you have a source for this information? It would be cool if they did that, I've never seen it or heard of it.
