Pistol shrimp are generally safe. Provided enough food, it will only use his gun to protect his burrow. Mantis shrimp are not safe and people usually mistake these two.

Ugh I hate that video  it's the most worthless pistol shrimp video ever ::) First of all, they substitute gunshots in for the sound of the pistol shrimp. Second of all, my pistol shrimp has lived with a cleaner shrimp for a year now and has never had any inkling what so every to blast it and eat it. The only time my pistol clicks is when a hermit or starfish goes down it's burrow or when he's trying to find his goby. Or if he gets mad at a rock or something. He's never "pistolled" as an offensive attack on anything. When our red serpent star goes down his burrow (not a very smart star) the pistol just uses small rapid clicks to scare him out. And if the star isn't scared, the shrimp just bulldozes him out

I believe it is also not the same pistol as the ones that are commonly sold for aquariums, it was much bigger including the pincers which look like they were made to hunt, unlike the reef-safe pistols.
