    Wow, I knew they were predatorial ...and that's how they get their name. But I never knew it was that crazy. :eek: lol. That's incredible.

    I knew this have seen it before but found this link while watching it again...the pistol shrimp is at the end #1 loudest animal.

    Not sure why you would say that. Everything in this video is absolutely true. While not entirely proven the temperature inside the bubbles is estimated to reach 8,540 degrees Farenheit.It also creates a flash of light(not visible to the naked eye) along with this incredible blast of heat and sound.

    Pistol shrimp are not the predators they are made out to be. They are scavengers. The claw is for defense.

    This is not true for all pistol shrimp.
    written by Scott W. Michael in Aquarium Fish International-The snapping behavior is thought to serve a number of different functions,in part depending on the snapping shrimp species in question.At least some of the predatory alpheids use the snapping ability to stun there prey. They have been known to incapacitate small fish (e.g. gobies) and eat them. They will also snap when driving off intruders or when jostling with conspecifics over a mate.It has been suggested that some species may even use the driving force produced during rapid claw closing to make holes in coral rock to burrow.
