i plan on upgrading to a 40 breeder tank and i have a few questions about livestock and a few other things. i will post them on their own line.
first thing could i have a mandarin? would the tank be big enough.
    could my stocking list be
    x2 clownfish
    x1 lawnmower blenny
    x3 chromis
    x1 mandarin
    would that work?
could i still use the light that i have? it is a clip on K-2 viper MH 150W light.
would two Maxi jet 1200 pumps be fine with my HOB filter? (would they provide enough flow?
would i need to order another cleanup crew?
how much is it really gonna help to increase my water volume by 20 gallons?

If you get a mandarin you will need a very good population of copepods.

    Hi Gexx

IMO - any tank upgrade is a good thing, so from a 29 to a 40 is beneficial, it gives more scope on stocking in terms of species and quantity

are you having a sump fuge combo? if so, the fuge makes an ideal location for a pod culture whilst you wait for tank to mature enough to house the mandarin

flow - all depends what you want to keep in the tank really , but a general guide would be 30 - 40 x water volume for softies so thats 40 gallons x 30- 40 = 1200 GPH -1600 GPH
sorry Im not up on the actual GPH of the power heads your using

if you wanted hard corals then increasing the flow to 50 or more x the water volume is a good starting point

    just my opinions
hope I didnt miss any questions?

the power heads are both 1200 gph. so that would be 2400 gph. is that too much?

for your mandarin issue yes you can have one. i would wait atleast a year before adding one, i would have a fuge and atleast 75lb of lr. also talk so your lfs and see if they have any mandarins that are eating prepared foods. Also your planning on having 7 good sized fish in a 40g tank so make sure you have a skimmer and good filtration

i can live without the chromis if need be. but my dad wants a busy tank sooooo. as for the skimmer im gonna ask for it for my bday in april. i want the bak pak protein skimmer since ive heard they are good. and i want to have 55 lbs of live rock but i will have to accumulate that over time.

Not in my opinion , but again it depends on the corals mostly that you want to keep, if they are positioned well you can still create some gentle flow areas for shrooms, and LPS corals, whilst having areas of high flow for corals that like more water movement

right now all i have are lps and softies with one lps. i plan on having one powerhead in each coner of the tank on the back corners then criss cross the water movement in the middle of the tank. if that makes any since.
