we all know our tanks heartbeat and how they breathe. when i came home tonight i noticed the sound wasnt the same coming from the front room. and i knew what it was. the first thing i did was look at the tank and the water level was down by 1". what happened was the main pump stopped working and was making a weird hum. went to the garage and got a brand new in the box replacement pump. took 10 min to pull the old one and the tank is up and running. ive been using the same pump for 5 years ( gen-x pcx100 ).

why am i putting this out there? for those of you with alot of money invested in your tank, it might be worth your while to have the essential life saving items as a backup at your becken need. this includes: lights, chiller and main pump. without the spare pump i would be %*$^%*&. to put it nicely!

I totally agree. I have extra pumps, light bulbs, battery operated air pumps, heater, just about anything I would need in an emergency. Even a generator!

We've got a spare pump down in the basement by the sump so if and when something like that happens to us, we'll be prepared. We've also got a ton of parts and pieces for all of our equipment "just in case". Someday, I'll get to see the floor of my garage again

Funny story. Roger woke me up at around 4 this morning asking me if I had heard "that noise". Said it sounded like a pump failing or something. So, cranky and a bit nervous (I've seen alot of horror movies), I came out to the living room, checked everything out and all was well. He didn't realize until after I had fallen back to sleep that the noise that he had heard was me snoring ::)

If you can't afford spare pumps, at least invest in spare impellers for your pump model.

re Tangster...failure sure to occur on holiday, or period where no lfs or supplier is open...

Yeah, that's ssssssexy....might as well put cold cream on my face before I go to bed while I'm at it

Great advice from omard. Spare impellers should definitely be on everybody's "emergency equipment" list.
