looks like some type of SPS, probably dead with coralline on it.

i was just wondering if it was dangerous, because i stuck it into a hole in the LR, one night my coral beauty pulled it out, then the next morning the cb died. the cb had a big cut on it's head (from before) though and wasn't doing to well.
i don't think it's dead, it has grown a little since i had it. and it's not coralline on it. it is purple the tips are white, where i guess it is growing.

it didn't come on the LR. i found it growing on a huge rock and just pulled off a piece to bring home.

    Possibly Rhodymenia sp.

hah! 1st page I open too looks promising. try matching it up against Jania adhaerens. Let me see if the google images match what is in the field guide...no sorry...Jania is flexible at the joint...got excited there would have been cool to get it on the first look. Check out the Amphiroa genus, it would be hard to get a species id with those pics. The differences between one species to the next isn't very great.

here is a good site that is accurate and has a few pictures from that genus as well as others it could be:

    http://images.google.com/imgres?img...v=/images?q=amphiroa&hl=en&safe=off&sa=N&um=1

Please note that in those pics you are looking at dead and dry specimens, which lack color.

when you are a plant nerd...:) (with a bunch of field guides... :) ) There are so many cool coralline (crutose usually outside of the hobby) algae out there, it would be cool to a tank with just them. Someone I bumped into on one of the forums had Titanoderma tessellatum. WOW!
