Any one object in using play sand ? I have been doing lots of reading on it and most people are ok with it.
As long as it does not have any silicates in it.

Dont feel like spending 100$ on dead "live" sand.

Also when I got my tank from craigs list, guy gave me a 5 gal bucket of sand. There appears to be water inside and its somewhat moist. If I use that, is that ok ?

Also what do you guys think of using sand from the beach, or there might be parasites and such in it ?

well idk about play sand.. i remember gexx making a thread about that a few months ago. I think they voted against it.
and beach sand im not sure, i wouldnt get it from there, it could have god knows what. and plus i think its illegal to take it anyways.

I tried play sand in a 10 gallon that I have slaved off of my main display tank for fun. Just to see how it worked out....

Didn't like it. The play sand it too fine and powdery. Gets stirred up too easily. Thus I would not recommend play sand and won't use it again myself.

    Can't comment on beach sand....

    Hope that helped.

I was told the sand is fulled with red tide and pollution where a tank couldn't sanitize it. nice to see some Tampa people on here :) . trust me i was thinking the same thing. i bought my sand from petco.com they have great deals on everything!!!!

play sand can be used but its a challenge to find the stuff that's not loaded with silicates. I've seen and used play sand once. I would still atleast put a bag of live sand on top.

Ok thanks guys. Both points taken. Play sand too fine and beach sand is dirty. jdigrego I live in St.Petersburg. Maybe we could trade some frags when I finally move in few weeks and set up my 90g.

What about my sand in the bucket, is it ok that its wet?

    Hey Monte

    I live in Tampa too

I would not use that sand......I moved some old sand maybe 5lbs from a 50 to a 65 and had such a high nitrate level it zapped my gorgous green zoa
