I would also be running carbon bags along with some light water changes along with that if your dead set on keeping so many fish in one tank.

freshwater is much more forgiving than saltwater, try to do some research, any book on fresh water or look online for some info. Good luck and hope everything turns out well

    Kate,

Agree with above posters. Steps should be as follows:

1.Return fish back to the store, I would say more then half of what you have now.
38 fish is alot for your tank specially only being 2 weeks old.
    2. 25%Water change immediately and add carbon.
3.Then wait 2 weeks and recheck your levels. They should have dropped heavily.
if you still see some traces then a 10% water change would be good here.
4.Let your tank sit for another 4 weeks and recheck your levels
5.If your levels seem to be stabalized then you can begin adding fish slowly.
buy 1 or 2 fish and place them in your tank, wait a few weeks and check your levels
If everything seems to be fine then you can repeat step 5.

I am assuming that you have a filter capable of filtering this system.

    Good Luck,
    Wish you well
    Chubbs

I'd 2nd. What chubby and Guitar man both posted ammonia in a F/W tank is nothing like in a marine tank and I'd ask do you have a air pump and a stone in the tank ? The bubbles that air stones provide are very fine. The bubbles rise and break the surface tension . Oxygen absorption is improved by the surface area being agitated. For the fish tank keeper this can silently create more oxygen in the water. Providing adequate oxygen in this way can increase the amount of fish that your aquarium can hold and it will force the ammonia a little lower as well . You should have the pump and a few air stones around with all tanks. You'll see the Ammonia drop in a few hr's to what levels ? Stop feeding and do some serious water changing and cut that fish load far to many in there Nuff said by me not being the official fish police :) .

I will think that when you said 180 ltrs it's basically a 55g you should have plenty of room to keep that many fish but it seems you introduce them a bit too soon like the reefers stated above, do the water changes and also use the ammonia lock deal syphoning must of the stuff laying in the bottom, and maybe changing your filter for a bigger one since there is so much fish in your tank, an Emperor 400 or a Aqua tech 30/60 if yours is any smaller than those, another option is to get a second filter
