I posted this under 'diseases', but I think I might get more response here:

I quarantined my coral beauty for about 2 1/2 weeks. He was doing okay, mostly hiding in the rocks, and he was eating. I did not use lighting in the QT, but there is ambient light from the room.

Today, I put him in the DT & after about an hour, the MH came on. It was then I noticed that he had very small, but many white spots on him. It looks more like powder than anything else. His behavior is fine - he's acting a lot better than he was in the QT, and he is eating. I don't know if he had it all along & I just didn't see it, or if it popped up after I put him in the DT. I also noticed the fire shrimp cleaning him.

I want to put him back in the QT, but it's almost impossible to catch him since he hangs around the rock.

Do you think he has ick or velvet? If so, what can I do if I can't catch him?

If it makes any difference, the only other fish in the tank are 2 clowns.

    Thanks!

I don't know if this will help - it's almost like a blanket made up of very, very tiny white spots. It runs the entire length of his body, mainly along his spine. There is a little bit on his sides as well.

    Thanks Luna!

Hi, well, one suggestion, since you have a QT (I am not a fan, I let the LFS do that for me) you should, as LFS does, run copper in it. That guarantees that if the fish had ick (or velvet) it would be eradicated. I believe it didn't and when introduced to the display it was shocked. Unless your QT is as close to your display (parameter wise, all parameters) your fish will be shocked when entering your display. Many aquarists, even experienced ones, fail to understand that Calc, Mag, Alk and SG can be difficult for a fish to adjust for in an hour or so acclimation period. How long did you acclimate it?
I always find out from the LFS what all their parameters are and acclimate accordingly.
Best suggestion now is (since you can't catch it, more stress) is Kick-Ick (not rid ick) and get some Marine-Max by Tropical Science. Hope all works out for you.

    Hi,

I just got out of a battle with ick and I lost (4fish).

I did not know what it was until it was too late. each of the four fish had one symptom of ick, but none were clear.

One was scratching against the rocks,
    another was gasping for air
    another was pale
and one had some white small sopots once in a while.

At the LFS they told me that I can buy some natural (plant made) medicine, that you can drop in the water before you add fish. It kills ick and ensures that new fish who are stressed when introduced to a new aquarium may get ick.
