Ive been having certain problems with my tank and need desprate help. My fish have been acting very strange and even agressive in some ways. I had just bought a velvet wrasse to go with my 2 clown fish, my starter fish, my sea star, and my racoon butterfly. My velvet wrasse seemed to have died in the few days ive had her and i don't know why. i'm testing the water now but it makes me curious to know if it was the butterfly. Ive also noticed that my clowns have been rather different. they are starting to hide in the left corner of the tank, my guess is that it could also be the butterfly or one of the clowns is blocking the other. Also my chocolate chip star has chunks missing from it. does anyone know what might be the case here in all of these situations? if you have any questions about the tank that might help you figure out what is wrong. please dont hesitate to ask.

    INFO ABOUT THE WRASSE:

also shes been acting up for the days we had her. the first day i brought her in my butterfly fish kept chasing her and that could have caused her stress. but shes been hiding under the rocks in the tank and wouldn't eat for two days. next thing you know shes dead, and the chocolate sea star is right on top of her. could the butterfly have anything to do with it. did the butterfly intimidate her and keep her from coming out to eat?

also my fish have been breathing very heavily. i put a new filter in to see if it will help.

    Hi Jeep rider

how long has tank been set up?
I cant ID the problem with any degree of accuracy but do have some thoughts

1 - star fish with missing chunks , could be rotting, which would indicate possible contaminents in the water
2 - star fish with missing chunks , could be a hitch hiker in your tank thats easting bits of him ?
3 -fish behaving strangley could also be down to water contamination - High ammonia for example can cause distress and affect fish behaviour and may also be the cause of the rotting on the star

testing would be really helpful follow Vettemans parameter check list above

Steve, would stray voltage possibly factor in?

Also, how is your surface aggitation, Jeep?

Your temps are way too high if it's actually at 87. If you only have 8lbs of live rock in your tank and that much livestock, you'll run into nitrate issues. Protein skimmers are highly recommended for any saltwater aquarium as it removes all the stuff that a filter can't.

Your age has nothing to do with it. From the way you've conducted yourself here, I would have thought you were an adult

were thinking it could be a hich hiker but they almost look like a white rash but their chunks when you feel them. but the star is white at the tips of some of his arms about three out of five of them are white or have peices chopped off. but the ammonia is fine. but it could explain some things. the first time we got our blue tang we had 3 clown fish and our starter but for some odd reason once we put that racoon in the tang and all three clowns got ick but the racoon started getting misty eyes. the clowns were fine and so was the racoon but our tang died from ick. then 2 of the clowns started smacking the smallest of the three with their back fins and we had to take our smallest one back. it has just been chaotic in this tank. we had 3 fish die and 1 shrimp eaten. we think its damien or the butterfly.

Thanks :)!! yeah were trying to fix the nitrate issues though. But i'll see if my dad has the money to get the protein skimmers. i heard they were pretty expensive. But what are the normal tempretures for a tank? i'm not good with this stuff. heh. but we had some problems with our air conditioning for a good 3 days. we try to keep a fan in that area to keep the tank at a good temp. until we got it fixed. its fixed now but i guess that didn't really help.

is there any way to cool the tank?
