Aerators are not as efficient for saltwater tanks as they are for freshwater. Bubbles aren't really adding oxygen to the water in the amount you need. What you need is surface agitation (ripples) in order to release the CO2 from the water and introduce O2 into it (gas exchange). Powerheads to make flow in the tank and to agitate the surface. I have one of my powerheads pointing up towards the surface in order to achieve this.

oh and do any of you know if there is a way to measure oxygen levels. we got a penguin 550 that creates a current in the tank, it also blow air into the water, looks almost like a bubble screen.

    from my dad.

well ours is blowing the current towards the top and creates ripples at the top of the surface its like pushing water up toward the surface and creating ripples at the surface.

again from my dad. heh. he telling me what to tell you and mr. steve.

Best way to gauge it is to measure the PH of the water. First test the tank's water. Then fill a cup with tank water and place a small airstone in it. After 30 minutes, test the PH and if it's higher than the tank's, you'll know that you need to increase the oxygen in your water.

If your surface is being agitated enough, then your best course of action to get your oxygen up is to lower the temp. Surface agitation can only go so far.

oh sorry slocal thats what ours is. a powerhead. my dad didn't quite fill me in with that information. he said that he just bought it yesterday. and were trying to lower the temprature now. and we finally peiced together why the temp is so high. during the day my dads bedroom gets really hot and like theres a window that shines on half the tank which explains the mysterious tempratures.
