I have a Koralia 1 (400gph) and a Koralia 2 (600gph) as well as my HOT Magnum filter that pushes out water like a powerhead (250gph).

So that's 1250 gph in my 29 gallon.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Koralia 2 and a Koralia 3 for starters. Having good flow in a tank also keeps detritus from building up in dead flow areas and running up your nitrates.

Getting even one extra powerhead is a step in the right direction. Skimming would help out your nitrates as well as adding more live rock and increasing your flow to keep detritus from building up in corners and behind rocks.

Yes- any type of power head will help - Slocal was suggesting what is currently thought of by many people to be "The best of the best" as they are awesome IMAO

A penguin 550 (Just googled it, does not have a great flow rate

as a suggestion- due to my mention of carbon earlier

    Hagen Fluval 1, 2, 3, 4 “Plus†Internal Filters

an internal power / cannister filter - you could get a Fluval 4 for your tank

throw away the supplied filter medium and fill with a good grade activated carbon - polish your water up real nice and provide extra movement

I picked fluval - as the outlet is at top of filter and not 2 inches down as it is on some models - this means its easy to get this brand to create surface movement , without having to angle to filter and having it move back to vertical as the suckers are poor , like I do with other models

    Steve

    just an idea

Stressed fish in general won't eat. I strongly urge you to urge your father to start taking corrective action. You've done all the work by asking and providing us all the info we've asked from you
