I now have 5 piles of this stuff. It starts out a red-brown colour, then changes to a tan/buff colour after a few weeks. My Hairy Sea Hare seems to care for the stuff. I have removed some, and it feels like rubber, and has black dots dispersed throughout the strands. It also seems to move some.

Okay, is this killing my reef tank, or is this some sort of egg deposit or a worm?

The only inhabitants of of the tank are, the Sea Hare, snails, one small crab (common variety), a flame red shrimp and two blennies. My sea hare was the last thing added to the tank before these things started to appear.

How strange. Can you get a better picture? It's really hard to tell what that is and when I enlarge the picture on my computer, it looks all digitized.

    A new view

I've lowered the size to just under the 97 limit, I hope this is better.

If there is another way of posting a photo, the original is up in the upper 300's

Definitely eggs of some sort but I would take them out as they are probably not viable and will most likely rot in your tank. I'm going to search for pics of sea hare eggs to see if that's what they are.

Edit: Yup, looks like sea hare eggs

Thank you, thank you, thank you

    AMCARRIG,

You are so clever! Absolutely correct, I was just looking at the tank, the sea hare is on the front glass, and the strands are coming out of her/his (?) mouth onto the glass, absolutely fascinating to watch her place them so carefully with the same mouth that cuts though the algae like a mower.

Thanks to all for the help!!!

    Michael

PS. and they do just die away it seems, unless they have microscopic offspring;D:idea2:

It's not uncommon for sea hares and other types of sea slugs to lay eggs upon introduction into our tanks. It's a stress reaction and, like most critters, when they're stressed, they go into reproduction mode....survival of the species and all that jazz :)
