About 3 months ago me and my gf bought a french bull dog. The kids, gf and i have of course fallen in love with him. He began to walk funny a few weeks ago so we took him for xrays yesterday. Our worst nitemare has come true, he has curvature of the spine up by his neck....hes only 8 months old. We are taking him to a specialist tomorrow, im a wreck and cant stop crying...If anyone has lost a dog or could help me deal with this with some encouraging words or outlook it would be appreciated. Heres a pic of the big guy:

Pretty pup! really sorry to hear that, but you need to have some faith! he might can make it through it's just a matter of time, the vet may tell you to put him to sleep or go through several operations w/o any guaranties of Brutus well being. So if he still eats and wag it's tail every now and then just let him be, don't want to make things worst and believe me we are the ones the need the prayers, animals only do as they are told. I feel bad for you all on this one but don't loose your hope!

Sorry to hear about that beautiful dog. I have a shar pei that was having trouble walking do to his knee caps popping out of place when he was a pup. The vet said he has to have surgery but we did not get the surgery on both back legs. All we did was pray and baby him and you know what he out grew it and the prayers helped because we did not have the money at the time. He is doing great now with no troubles. So just keep the faith. I really hope he gets better because they are FAMILY.

Have faith. I have a 13 year old dalmation that is declining everyday. She still wags her tail and knows who I am. Everyday I carry her upstairs to bed because she has slept there all of her life. Its my way of giving back to her the joy she has given me. The end is near for my "puppy" but I have a hard time of letting her go. I know how you feel so keep praying and have faith. Enjoy the "dude" everyday. Your in my prayers!

I'm sorry to hear this, its sad news indeed. I also have a frenchie and I can tell you they're tough little dogs. You're doing the best you can for him so hang in there.

Best wishes to you and your family, and of course Brutus too.

I have an english bulldog she has cheered me up in the worst of times. All bulldogs have great endearing personalities. We had her as a pup when our lab was getting older she changed him into a young guy and kept him going a few years longer. I will do anything to keep her around. Just do what is best for the little guy and hope he pulls through.

Try not to get ahead of yourself at this point. Go to the specialist and see what he/she says. Listen to what they tell you...dogs are tough little creatures. One thing about dogs is that they dont "question" why things happen to them, they just go on. And it seems that they recover much faster then we humans do because of that!

I recently had to go through a similar situation with Oscar the pug in the avatar. He was a rescue pug and pugs like Frenchies have breathing problems...most brachycephalic (smooshed in face) dogs do to some degree. Since he was a breeder dog, nothing was ever done about it and he would pass out when I had him. Vet did not want to do anything for a while due to the risks of the surgery until he needed to. I just kept him quite. Time came last fall to make the decision...he needed to have the surgery or be put down. Vet thought he had a good possibility of recovering so I went ahead and did it. It was a horrible decision to make for me...the surgery was very risky and the vet said there was a possibilty that they would not wake him up from anesthesia.

Anyway he had the surgery and did ok for a couple months. He actually was doing really well, then developed some new symptoms and got really sick so I had to make the decision to run a bunch of new tests and treat him aggressively or put him to sleep. So I decided he had been through enough. It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to decide.

But again, you have got to listen and trust the vets that you are going to. The fact that you are seeing a specialist is a plus! Make the decisions from what YOU believe is the best from the advice you receive from the vets. Then dont ever second guess those decisions.

One of the biggest questions I have today is...did I truly give Oscar a fair shot? And the reason I ask that is because I had a lot of pressure placed on me by my family because of the costs of the surgery and the care that he had received up to that point. I had spent probably close to $3200 in the past year on him, meds, food, blood tests, x-rays etc...surgery alone was $1800 which I had to open a new credit card for him (still paying off). The emergency clinic was estimating close to $800 just to see what was wrong with him. So everybody started telling me to put him to sleep due to the bills.

They did not understand...he was not just a dog...he was a fur child. I know people dont understand that are not in that situation. But because of that pressure I will always have that question in the back of my mind.

You and your girlfriend and your dog will be in my thoughts and prayers and please update us as soon as you hear anything. And please try to get some sleep tonight..easier said then done but nothing is going to change by being up all night worrying about it!
