But he also said that the HA has been in there since the beginning....would it be harmful to try to take it out now since everything had adapted to it?

I would take the hair algae out, I dont really see how it could harm anything. Also keep a check on parameters to include phosphates/silicates.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I would start buying new base rock and switching it out as soon as the tank starts to stabilize again. I have a feeling those rocks are probably just leaching phosphates now.

You can try getting members of a cuc that eat GHA and run some GFO, remove what you can manually, make sure the lighting does not have old bulbs and only use RO/DI water for mixing and top offs. Hopefully it will not be the uphill battle that it appears to be.

Keep watching the parameters and do the appropriate water changes should the inhabitants start to appear more stressed.

    Good Luck.

    +1

For a tank that size, it would also be helpful to invest in a protein skimmer. That will remove dissolved organics which create ammonia, thereby reducing the bio-load on your live rock filtration. There are a lot of good HOB units on the market; just steer clear of the SeaClone and get a good one that works, like Eshopps or Reef Octopus.

CuC is clean-up crew... hermits, snails, etc that feed on detritus and algae.

GFO is granular ferric oxide, such as Phosban which absorbs phosphates from the water. You can place that in a media bag and hang it in one of your HOB filters.
