Plenum Filter

    Does a plenum filter really need to be 3 layers taking up a total of 6" to work correctly?

    Plenums have been shown to be of no actual use and would not waste my time and effort in adding one. A very fine grained sandbed, be it deep or shallow sitting on the bottom of the tank will do just fine.

    Thanks for the advice. I have a 120 gal. that I'm converting from fresh so I'm doing a lot of reading and heard that a plenum filter would help with the nitrates.

    Not really or not all all actualy, you would get a lot more out of an algae turf scrubber or a suitably sized refugium, a live deep sand bed would also be of use as well. Personaly I prefer the use of algae as it not only deals with nutrients but also provides nutrients in the way of live food by being another habitat that many small critters will use as shelter.
