plexiglass adhesive

when building your own refugium or sump, what kind of adhesive do you use to hold the plexiglass together? It seems that I heard some people on this site talking about an adhesive that was better than plain old silicone.

Right now I am trying to build a case that goes on the inside of my aquarium for a humble refugium. I tried gluing three coke bottles together with silicone, it didnt work :-/

Right now I have some cheato hanging in a slim jug but the jug is too deep and takes up half my tank. I would like to find something that is long and narrow so that it only takes up the top part of my tank.

It seems that using plexiglass would be the best route. However, I dont think that silicone would keep together after witnessing the coke bottle incident.

After reading Matt's post on refugiums I have also tried to find a long, narro and shallow container to make a refugium out of. Ive thought of using a trough for drywall mudd but the ones I have found are not long enough..

So unless anyone has any ideas on what common objects can be modified for a slim hang on refugium, what kind of adhesive would you suggest for gluing plexiglass together?

 

try weldon...there are diffrent numbers for the weldon the higher the number the thicker it is! ex. weldon3,weldon4 etc...

I just used weldon # 4 to fix my protienskimmer.. it works very well

 

Silicon will not bond to plexiglass like it will to glass --- I just built a 24 gallon sump with a product similar to weld on (got it locally don't remember the name off the top of my head) --- comes in a small jar and I put it in an applicator bottle with a really really thin needle -- comes out like water but actually sort of melts the plexiglass parts to each other, you can also see it fill the gaps (assuming you have a nice flat surface) and if you pull on it early you can see how it strings apart. Thats the plexiglass bonding to itself. I wanted about an hour per portion I bonded together and gave it a full day to cure. It will keep curing for about a week getting stronger all the time.
I set up my sump as a quarantine tank temporarily and it's filled to the brim no leaks.

 

I use the weldon also, TAP plastics has their own brand of stuff that I've used in the past but never to hold water.

I know that Dow Corning has a bunch of silicone adhesives that will bond to a wide variety of materials- there might be one that will work especially well with plexiglass- you should check it out. Silicone Adhesives and Sealants - Dow Corning
