I'm setting up a new sump and I need to plug a hole (for external pump). I thought no problem use a bulk head and PVC plug, the plug is leaking.

I'm looking for suggestions. It is tight and I used some teflon tape.

    Thanks, Joe

The bulkhead is a threaded style and the plug is leaking at the threads? Teflon tape doesn't work well on large threads, unfortunately. Plumber's compound/paste will do a better job, but I can't say 100% that it is reef safe.

If you have the option of draining it completely, I would clean and dry the bulkhead and plug, and use silicon sealant on the threads and around the inside of that joint. IT will be difficult, if not impossible, to remove the plug, but it should solve the leaking.

Thanks. I was thinking of sealant, but I wanted to see if there where any ideas out there that weren't more or less permenent.

How soon can I put water back in the sump after using aquarium sealant?

Best to let it cure overnight.
