ok so first off i have two 1" drain pipes. one goes straight to the protein skimmer section with a ballvalve, the second goes straight to the refugium section with a ballvalve also. the problem is that the overflow is generating A LOT of noise. it is setup like a durso but without the elbos pointing down at the end (they wouldnt fit in the overflow box). i first tried shutting off one pipe and tuning down the other so the water level in the overflow box was just above the bulkheads and it was silent. but i relized that if anything clogged the pipe it would flood the tank. is there any other oppitions to make my tank quiet?

sometimes it just takes a few weeks for the pipes to slime over, after that it should quiet everything down. you can also try venting the drains with some rigid 1/4" tubing (or a straw).

Never ever restrict an overflow with a ball valve, all the way open when in operation and all the way closed for maintenance, no throttling. If something needs restricting use a ball valve on the discharge side of the return pump.

There are smaller standpipes such as the Stockman which is what I use, its quite a bit smaller and will even fit in most hang on back overflow boxes.

Try airline tubing in the middle of the pipe.
