Increasing the size of the return line is always a good idea as it lessens the headloss due to friction and fittings and increases flow.
Smaller lines do not deliver more pressure, thats just backwards. It reduces the flow since there is greater restriction but it increases the velocity or speed, not pressure, which it is actually reducing due to friction loss. If you are looking for velocity, oversize the return pipe then install a restricted nozzle on the end at the last possible point, it gives you lower head loss and higher volume.
Pressure, volume and velocity are all different things.

Many pump manufacturers such as Mag recommend oversizing the lines as standard practice. I know when I went from a 3/4" to a 1" retrun on my old Ocean Runner 3500 the flow increased dramatically. Same with my new Water Blaster when I went from 1" up to 1.25".
