I also did a "T" split on my drain pipe from overflow. I put a ball valve on both ends but never use the ball valve on the skimmer side. You don't need to one on the skimmer side IMO but for 4 bucks it doesn't hurt. I would def. go with a filter sock and I agree with Ocean Man on the return side. My return section is only about 5" wide and 8" deep but I run an external pump and have a DIY top off. Good start though...kepp up the good work and get some pics up when you're all done. :)

Yes, the water level in the DT, skimmer section and fuge should always remain at the same level. The water level will change in the return section as evaporation occurs.

That's why I'm trying to make my return smaller, so I can have an in sump skimmer, really no room for a hob like I thought would work...

Is that a 10 gallon sump/fuge? what skimmer are you thinking about putting in there?

When you get it running make sure you mark the high and low marks of the return so you can fill it easily and know how much you have left until it starts sucking in air. It's a little bit helpful :)

I will also add that make your fuge and return as big as you can. Skimmer section doesn't matter a whole lot since it's just used to collect water from the DT and skim it. The volume of that section isn't nearly as important as the fuge and the return (unless you run ATO as mentioned above).

Well its a ten gallon sump, specs are mentioned above. I was gonna see if I could squeeze a marineland marine pro 100 in there. The footprint is 5 5/8" x 4 1/8" so it'll be tight...

That's a big tight. I have a 11ga so I designed mine to fit barely! I use the eShopps PSK-75. It's not bad nor is it huge either. If you decide something else you can look into that.

Opps wrong thread, my specs aren't mentioned above. Overflow section is roughly 5"x10" at the moment. So I was gonna try and make it a bit bigger so I can fit it. Ill look into the psk 75...
