I want to start pod farming (possible sales, maybe just for the sake of....stuff).....I can grow pods like crazy, keeping them from going through motors is the problem. I'm thinkin of just having a closed system with no filter and only water flow caused by either a air pump and lift tube (too much evap?) or an external motor with a slow moving prop extended into a seperated chamber. Or thirdly just use a power head and use ultra super fine filter material (a few, 1, or even sub micron possibly) seperating the grow are from the PH.

Pump water into the pod farm and have a gravity flow out.

I've come to the same conclusion.

    You've got me wondering....

I want to add a 'fuge to my system, but I really want it with sump in the basement. The only way for pods to make it to the display tank will be a rough ride through a 1/3hp Reeflo pump. What are the chances that they could survive it? And if they don't, the "remains" would still be a good food source, I suppose.

Could you not use a peristaltic (dosing ) pump on a timer to give them a smooth ride and preventing them getting to the main system pump

I suppose a peristaltic pump would work, but that wouldn't prevent them from entering the main sump .... there would still need to be a higher flow of water through the refugium than a peristaltic would provide, and more pods would wash away in the current than take the "gentle" route.

Could you mot use foam to stop the vast majority getting to the sump?

Probably. That would require constant cleaning, though. Deep down I'm really very lazy! :)
