Consider being more specific. Better where? On the sand or in your wet/dry? In your sump or the refugium?

On my tank? As far as bioballs or LR goes, the ratio is 99% LR (in the tank) to 1% bioballs--I have a wet/dry I've converted to a sump to serve my purposes. The bioballs total 14 in number, and are there to deaden the noise created by the waterfall effect in the wet/dry.

The bioballs in my case are not used in the traditional fashion. They are there for noise control. They are scarce enough in number to not pose a threat insofar as getting gunked up.

I use rubble in the inlet portion of my sump. There is some filter padding above it that is replaced every week to prevent any detrius build up.

Both can be used in multiple applications. There are pro's and cons to both items and those pros and cons will depend on the application and what you are trying to achieve.
