Lots of people who have to pay a lot of money for their water utilize these as opposed to RO/DI (but they add the alumina add-on accessory) because of the lack of waste water. They are a lot more expensive up front but will pay for themselves over time.

I live at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers (i.e. CHEAP water) so I use RO/DI instead and fill up my washing machine or water plants with my wastewater.

Great idea about the uses for RO waste water. Any other suggestions out there? It should be fine for drinking right? I could top-off my freshwater tanks with it too, I'd imagine...

I wouldn't drink the wastewater in my area because I have 350~425 TDS going in. All of that will be removed and sent out as waste. (Granted, a lot of that is going to be Calcium, carbonates, Magnesium, etc. and not harmful...the problem is, I don't know what makes up the remainder of the TDS).

I can't answer about the freshwater tanks as I know diddly squat about them.
