Picked up this piece of dead coral with a bunch of polyps on it this weekend.. I think they were incorrectly priced ($9.99) but since there were no other polyps in the tank the owner gave them to me for that price.. :)

Anyways.. while trying get out the door for 10 bucks I forgot to ask if they had any comon name..

They are a brownish color with a orange ring when opened.. the center is a pinkish skin tone..

There may be just too many varieties of these to attach a name to them but if anyone knows please let me know..

    Thanks,

    Great!

    Those little buggers are zooanthids!

My favorite polyp :) i would put those high up in the tank, they like the light :)

the more feathery one is a Xenia i believe...maybe Pink red sea?

the xenia almost has a blue coloration...could be the lighting or you may have been lucky enough to own the "semi-rare" blue xenia (or my eyes need to be checked). the other is definitely a zoanthid colony, looks like you may have another variation in the back with a yellow mouth too.

Yea.. the little xenia start is the same type as I have on another frag.. nothing unusuall.. may just be lighting.. It is a pulsing xenia. A nice little addition to this frag.. It will be interesting to see what else develops on this frag as it seem to have a lot going on..

Zoanthid Bruce, I'm sure you meant to type that though :D

Zoa's ID is a hotly debated subject amongst coral researchers. Other then Zoanthus sp., I don't think you'll get much more.

As for the Xenia, to hard to tell from just a few polyps. It's to early to tell if it's a tree type, matting, etc. Defintily can't tell from the color what region it's from. Most pink ones I've run across are of Indo Pacific origin though.
