I just received two different corals and am having some dificulty in pin-pointing which species they are. The first is here:

The ones I am asking about are the two giant polyps, each about 1"-1.5" across at this stage of expansion. They have not fully opened yet but it looks like they will resemble some smaller palys I have, complete with the green coloration. I have searched "giant palythoa" but seem to get many different organisms all being called the same thing and none look as large as these.

    The second is here:

These generally resemble a zoa (polyp size ~1/2") but seem to be much more tightly packed and the few that have started to give me a glimpse of color are a bright white with a fluorescent turquoise hue. I have never seen a photo of a white polyp before.

    Thanks for the help.

I may be wrong but don't the polyps in the first picture look more like some sort of shroom?

I suppose that in this picture they do look a little like a mushroom but when you see them in person they have a very distinct ring of tentacles that are still retracted. I have actually found many pictures of what I am guessing these are but there is no name or referrence made to them in any of the photos:

    My Coral Adventures: October 2008

If you scroll nearly halfway down you will see many of them intermixed with the zoanthids on the rocks.

Also, I am fairly certain that I have identified the white ones as encrusting white zoanthids although I have not seen any with the fluorescent coloration mine have.

the first ones are just common large brown/green button polyps, common coral hitch hiker,i have several my self with the biggest being about 2" in diameter

the second pic zoas is hard to tell, the color could be somewhat washed out and if so will likely color up after a while after they acclimate to your tank and light. But if they are white, that would be pretty cool.

Not all corals have fancy names, just the ones people think they can make big bucks off of. When I started in this hobby in 2002, all palys and zoas were called polyps. As in "orange polyp rock" or "green polyp rock" LOL.

You could look up Texas Trash palys and see if that's what they are.
