I was at my local LFS and I saw a pair of 3"-4" pompano for sale. How would they do in a FOWLR tank? How hard are they to take care of? How would they do with with the small grouper I have already? Thanks for any knowledge on this.

What size is your tank? Pompano can get quite large for an aquarium. In nature, the patrol the beaches and dig through the sand looking for crustaceans. Part of me feels as if they will die in a tank setting, unless provided ample room.

Would you or the seller need a permit to sell/own a game fish such as a Pompano?

I have a 45 gallon tank and as far as I know there is no special permit needed.

Why would you want a pompano, not really an aquarium fish IMO? And that tank isn't nearly big enough for a fish like that or a grouper. sorry, but that groupers gonna outgrow that tank ASAP and prob eat anything you put in there:(

I can't say for sure, but I don't think 45 gallons is anywhere near big enough for a Pompano, let a lone 2. They can reach 18" in length, btw. Are you sure they're Pompano?

Right now I'm just entertaining the idea, seeing if it could even work since I've never heard of pompano in a tank.
The LFS says their African Pompano which they are clearly not, but they are definitely pompano.

African pompano get much, much bigger (almost 5-feet in length) and Florida law prohibits the collection of any individual under 2-feet in length.

Are you sure they aren't what are known as "look-downs"? These are more common in reef settings.

Regardless of whether they are Pompano, African Pompano or look-downs, your tank is not even in the realm of the size it needs to be to house one of these fish.
