I believe that is on the package, and that would explain why a box is so inexpensive

I think what Dingo is getting at, is that you are leaving out an important piece of information. It is quite simple really, and I would tell you, but the Sheldon in me says it would be more fun to make you read this article (or wait would that be the Lucifer in me :devil1:).

I read the original question exactly the same way; 50.5 cups.

And I just checked and tried to saturate some salt water. "my salinity was 50ppt, at 77 degrees F, which gave me a specific gravity of ?" ;)

So, since it seems we agree "salinity" of 50.5 cups was the original question, what do I win?

:uhoh: seriously???? What is your temperature you mix your salt at? For me to perfectly get 1.024 I use 4 (1/2 cups) & 1 (1/4 cups) of salt. For me to get 1.026 I need 5 (1/2 cups) at 78* and I use the Red Sea Coral Pro Salt.

I fai lat math miserably so I will make my answer simple, I add until I get teh gravity I want ;D

other than that dont go by the bag go by the salinity meter

Haha for sure, but good to understand the difference between salinity and specific gravity and why temperature and atmospheric pressure effect specific gravity, but not salinity. Otherwise your not comparing apples to apples. Just having a little fun to point that out. Also, wording the question wrong originally was asking for it LOL.

But yeah, the s.g. on the side of the box should be pretty close, but it could vary if you are not compensating for temperature and/or not using a temperature compensated measuring device, such as a refractometer with automatic temperature calibration. Also, if your not using a calibrated refractometer, calibrated with a salinity standard, your reading may be off by a surprising amount.
