My smallest female lyretail anthias has unilateral popeye. I noticed it a few days ago and last night it was really bulging out. Looks awful.

She is swimming normally and eating.

I read unilateral is usually from an injury. Is that true? The male anthias does bully her sometimes (not bad, just to show who's boss) and I have a new tang that bugs her sometimes. I'm wondering if she hit her eye on a rock.

If it's injury, is there anything I can do? Is there any way to tell if it's bacterial or from injury?

    Thanks.

i'm not sure if there is anything you can do if it is from an injury. my christmas wrasse has had one eye like that for about a year stemming from an attack by my powder blue tang (i think). i have never seen any sign that it bothers him although he might express a different opinion if i could ask him.

I had a Bartlett's get it once; seemed to be from injury.

It went away in 2-3 weeks with normal (good) husbandry.

agreed, just keep the water quality up and add selcon to the food. my anthias have had this more than once. always just one eye and it healed on its own. took a few weeks and it became worse looking, before it got better.

Evolved and pink4miss are spot on. I had a clown get it. Good water quality and diet and the eye healed in about a month.

My tang had it after I got him for a week and a half. Selcon soaked food and keep it up.

My Damsel got popeye from a sudden rise in temperature (about 4 degrees F in 2 hrs) just a couple weeks ago, it is almost entirely healed now, but I think the most important thing is to just keep your fish eating and the water quality good.

    Thanks everyone!

It is so horrifying looking. Ugh.

I've had her about 2 years, so she's healthy. Water quality is great and I do water changes every 2 weeks.

I'll add Selcon to the food and hope for the best!!
